What is Avios, and How Does It Work?
Have you found your mind drifting as you go about your daily life recently, dreaming of that holiday you sorely need? I’m sure everyone experiences this at one time or another. The trouble is, money has a way of quickly bringing your head back down to earth after these fantasies.
But rewards schemes might be able to help. The Avios Travel Rewards Programme offers a variety of treats to its members, including travel perks: from flights to trains to hotels to full holidays.
Rather than worrying about where the money is going to come from for your flights or hotel room, you can collect points through the Avios Travel Rewards Programme that will cover much of the cost for you. Simply collect Avios on everyday purchases, and redeem them against holidays, flights, experiences and transport.
Avios are essentially a currency unit that you can use instead of, or alongside, your money, so that your holiday desires can become that little bit more feasible. The more points you accumulate, the more treats you can enjoy – or, simply save as many points as possible and blow them all on one all-out holiday of a lifetime!
The scheme has lots of partners—and many of them are companies you may already be using. Use the Avios eStore to access online shops, bag a Lloyds/TSB rewards credit card and buy flights via British Airways or Iberia to collect extra Avios. From shopping for groceries using your Tesco Clubcard to filling up your car at a local Shell petrol station, the ways to collect Avios are broad.
At Tesco, you’ll get 600 Avios for every £2.50 Clubcard voucher you trade in. There are also plenty of promotions throughout the year, so you could receive double Avios at times. If you’re filling up your tank at Shell, the Drivers’ Club scheme offers 10 Avios for every 20 litres of fuel you buy (just opt in to receive Avios as your reward preference).
Spending Avios is equally simple. Exchange them for flights and only pay the associated taxes, fees and charges for a destination (in Europe, this often means a cash charge of just £35 for a flight!). The more points you have, the further you can go.
Points can also be redeemed against Eurostar trips, care hire, package holidays and hotel rooms anywhere in the world. If you’re looking to stay closer to home, Avios also offer more than 150 UK experience days, from theme parks to driving challenges to wildlife excursions.
The Avios Travel Rewards programme is there to help all of us get that little bit more out of our daily spending, and encourage us to enjoy treats without worrying about the money aspect. Membership is completely free, so why not give it a go? You’ve got nothing to lose.
Head over to the Avios website and use the online calculator to work out how many Avios you could be collecting annually, and start daydreaming about where they might take you.
