Grilled cheese sandwiches: the 7 best places in the world to get them
The sandwich is a globally adored comfort food. I never understood how the simple ingredients of bread, meat, and cheese could make such a delicacy. But it is undeniable. With sandwiches it is about personal preference. But most people agree that the grilled sandwich has the edge over its uncooked counterpart.
While toasted sandwiches can be found at just about any random diner in the world, there are locations that are miles ahead in the grilled sandwich game. While most people don’t embark on a journey centered on finding good food, it sure serves to improve the overall experience at a destination.
While you’d do well (and be silly not to) indulge in the local delicacies while abroad, comfort foods like grilled sandwiches can help us feel at home when we’re experiencing a taste sensation-overload. The National Grilled Sandwich Day in the United States is a true testament to the love people have for these toasted treats.
Here are the top places in the world to eat one.
Los Angeles, USA
La La Land is home to possibly the best grilled sandwiches in the United States – and that’s saying something. If you’ve just taken a behind-the-scenes tour at one of the leading Hollywood studios or are just taking a stroll when hunger starts to bite, it in your stomach’s best interest to pop in at Heywood which is exclusively a grilled cheese shop. Place an order for the Italian Bleu Jeans or the Game Changer and you won’t be disappointed.
Still, in the United States, our next stop is Boston where you may want to tour the Freedom Trail to see and hear the origins of this great country. When you are done with sightseeing or business engagements, it’s time to grab a bite. Sandwiches are very popular in the United States and as such can be found right, left, and centre. But as grilled sandwich lovers, we don’t want just any sandwich but the best of them all! Sample the sandwich on offer at Acquitaine which is a French bistro at the heart of the city. The sandwich here is made of confit and gruyere cheese with a little sprinkled country mustard – a great grilled sandwich!
Before we take off to other parts of the world, let’s make a quick stop in the land of the Texas Rangers. Austin is the capital of the expansive State of Texas and the leading outdoor destination in the United States. In Austin, we check-in at the Burro Cheese Kitchen where we will find a variety of grilled sandwiches to rival any grilled sandwich found anywhere in the world.
How could we not include France in a list of the best cheese sandwiches? *Shrugs shoulders with Gallic over-emphasis*. In fact, cheese is so popular in Normandy that there is a Cheese Museum set within a Camembert village which has a broad range of cheese attractions. The decision to make is how you want your cheese. Ripe, melting and preferably in the form of a croque-monsieur it will be delicious in the poshest patisserie or a modest backstreet cafe.
Think Somerset and you soon think of one its biggest exports: cheese. Fast gaining recognition for its bries and blue cheeses, the locality is still synonymous with cheddar. It is also home to Cheddar Gorge, a system of limestone caves in the Mendips where huge barrel-shaped cheddars are matured. Cafes here serve the best – and strongest tasting – toasties. Oh, and they don’t say grilled cheese in the UK.
I couldn’t leave out the Bauru, the Brazilian version of a grilled sandwich which has been around since 1934. The Bauru has more storeys than the famously hard-to-fit-in-your-mouth Club Sandwich. The good thing is you don’t have to be actually in Brazil to Enjoy the Bauru as they have been exported by The Big Cheezy which has a location in New Orleans in the United States.
If you’re in Asia, particularly Singapore, then you can sample some of the best grilled sandwiches there are. For the very best I suggest checking out Catalunya, OverEasy, and Southbridge.
